There are
more than 2 ramps in Barnstable, but most of the ramps are "sticker
only" once the fish are here, so we'll just stick with the two that are
accessible year round. Between these two you should be close enough to
where you need to fish, just use whichever is closer.
The first ramp is in the village
of Cotuit, this ramp is a fairly recently rebuilt ramp, but the
parking is a little tricky, I'll explain though. There are 2
places you can park, one is along the road up on Putnam Avenue, which
if you'll scroll a little to the north of where the map below is
centered, you will see. You can park on both sides of Putnam, as long
as there isn't a sign telling you otherwise (thankyou Cotuit
Kettleers!!) The second place you can park is over by the town dock
which you will see by going just a little south on the map below, the
street is Oyster Pl Rd. and you can park on the right side, exiting the
dock, just before Main St.. There are several spots on the right that
are for non resident parking, this is convenient also, in so much as
you can drop one person off at the ramp with the boat and have them
meet you at the dock, which has a hose for washing down your boat and
also has a dumpster and a porta potty. The ramp itself is shallow
and may be too shallow at low tide for anything more than a 20" draft
boat, also the shallow angle means you will have to back in farther to
get the boat on and off the trailer, usually needing back your vehicle
into the water. There is no dock at this ramp, you have to hold or beach
your boat. All in all this ramp is quite
usable during all but the 2 hours surrounding high tide. There
are several ways to leave the harbor, look at the map, I think you'll
get the idea. The channel is well marked stay in it till you are
outside, beyond the last set of markers to be safe.
Directions-
click on the directions link in the map. The other
ramp in Barnstable with access to the sound, that is open to the public
year round is located in Hyannis
on the inner harbor This ramp is good for larger vessels,
although there is a drop of at the end you need to take care with, at
low tide this is a concern, but as long as you keep your trailer tires
from going over the edge you will be fine, this is a very popular ramp,
especially in the spring, when the scup and sea bass are running off
Hyannis. There is some parking at the ramp itself and also there
is an overflow lot located a short way up the road the ramp is on, on
the left hand side. Best bet is to get there early. Overnight
parking is allowed at this
ramp.
